Whereas, so far as these Rules are made under the Trade Marks Act 1938(1), the Secretary of State has, in pursuance of section 40(3) of that Act and before making these Rules, published notice of his intention to make these Rules and of the place where copies of the draft Rules might be obtained by advertising such notice in the Trade Marks Journal and the Official Journal (Patents) on 20 February 1991 and 27 February 1991, being the manner which he considered most expedient so as to enable persons affected to make representations to him before the Rules were finally settled:

Now, therefore, the Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 40(1)(e) of the Trade Marks Act 1938 and now vested in him(2), and in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 36(1) of the Registered Designs Act 1949(3) and section 123(1) of and paragraph 14 of Schedule 4 to the Patents Act 1977(4), hereby makes the following Rules:—

1.  These Rules may be cited as the Patent Office (Address) Rules 1991 and shall come into force on 15th April 1991.

2.  The addresses of the Patent Office shall be—

(a)Cardiff Road, Newport, Gwent NP9 1RH; and

(b)for the period ending with 28th April 1991, State House, 66-71 High Holborn, London WCI 4TP, and thereafter, 25 Southampton Buildings, London WC2A 1AY.

3.  The address of the Manchester Branch of the Trade Marks Registry of the Patent Office shall be c/o Companies House, 75 Mosley Street, Manchester M2 3HR.

4.  The Patent Office (Address) Rules 1985(5) are hereby revoked.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Rules)

These Rules revoke and replace the Patent Office (Address) Rules 1985 (S.I. 1985/1099).

They give effect to the transfer of the Patent Office to two new addresses as follows:—

(a)on 15th April 1991 to premises in Newport, Gwent; and

(b)on 29th April 1991 to Southampton Buildings in London, from the existing address in State House.

They also specify the new address of the Manchester Branch of the Trade Marks Registry.
