The Lord Chancellor and the Lord Advocate, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 5(3) of the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1991(1), hereby make the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1991 (Commencement) Order 1992.
2. The Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1991 shall come into force on 1st May 1992.

This Order brings into force on 1st May 1992 the Civil Jurisdiction and Judgments Act 1991, which gives the force of law in the United Kingdom to the 1988 Lugano Convention on jurisdiction and the enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters, made between the member states of the European Community and of the European Free Trade Association. The Lugano Convention will also enter into force for the United Kingdom on 1st May 1992. The only EFTA state which has ratified the Convention so far is Switzerland.
