Whereas a draft of this Order has been laid before and approved by a resolution of each House of Parliament:
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in pursuance of section 1(2) of the Armed Forces Act 1996(1), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:—
1. This Order may be cited as the Army, Air Force and Naval Discipline Acts (Continuation) Order 1997.
2. The Army Act 1955(2), the Air Force Act 1955(3) and the Naval Discipline Act 1957(4) shall continue in force for a period of twelve months beginning on the day immediately following 31st August 1997 (which is the date on which those Acts would otherwise expire).

Section 1(1) of the Armed Forces Act 1996 provides that the Army Act 1955, the Air Force Act 1955 and the Naval Discipline Act 1957 should continue in force until 31st August 1997 and should then expire unless continued in force in accordance with that section.
This Order enables the Army Act 1955, the Air Force Act 1955 and the Naval Discipline Act 1957 to continue in force for a period of 12 months beyond 31st August 1997.
