The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Article 2 of the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution) (Law of the Sea Convention) Order 1996(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution) (Limits) Regulations 1997 and shall come into force on 20th March 1997.
2. Paragraph 1 of the Schedule to the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution) (Limits) Regulations 1996(2) shall be amended as follows:
(a)in the second line, the words “bounded by a series of lines” shall be replaced by the words “the lines”; and
(b)the entries numbered 40 and 41 shall be replaced by the following entries:
“40. 60° 40' 00" N | 04° 24' 00" W | 40-41 Parallel of Latitude |
41. 60° 40' 00" N | 04° 00' 00" W | 41-42 Meridian of Longitude” |

These Regulations amend the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution) (Limits) Regulations 1996 to include within the zone beyond the territorial sea around the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man in which jurisdiction is exercisable in order to prevent pollution by discharges from ships, the waters above the area of continental shelf designated in the Continental Shelf (Designation of Areas) Order 1997. The opportunity has also been taken to clarify in one respect the drafting of the 1996 Regulations.
