A system of fixed piles installed to bedrock and linked by floating booms to demarcate the southern boundary of the navigable channel through the bridge in its open position. The piles and booms shall define a line no more than 15 metres to the south of, and parallel to, the centre line of the River Tyne for distances of 45 metres east and 40 metres west of the horizontal axis of rotation of the bridge together with an angled section, at each end of the line, 40 metres long angled between 30 degrees and 40 degrees away from the centre line of the River Tyne.
