The Lord Chancellor, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 1A(5) of the Fatal Accidents Act 1976(1), makes the following Order:
1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Damages for Bereavement (Variation of Sum) (England and Wales) Order 2002 and shall come into force on 1st April 2002.
(2) This Order shall apply only to causes of action which accrue on or after 1st April 2002.
2. In section 1A(3) of the Fatal Accidents Act 1976, for “£7,500” there shall be substituted “£10,000”.

This Order, which applies only to causes of action accruing on or after 1st April 2002, amends section 1A(3) of the Fatal Accidents Act 1976, increasing the sum which may be awarded as damages for bereavement in England and Wales from £7,500 to £10,000.
1976 c. 30. Section 1A was inserted by the Administration of Justice Act 1982 (c. 53), section 3(1) and amended by S.I. 1990/2575.
