Whereas a draft of this Order has been laid before Parliament in accordance with section 1(3) of the European Communities Act 1972(1) and has been approved by a resolution of each House of Parliament:

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 1(3) of the European Communities Act 1972 or otherwise in Her Majesty vested, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:

1.  This Order may be cited as the European Communities (Definition of Treaties) (Agreement establishing an association between the European Community and its Member States and the Republic of Chile) Order 2003. It shall come into force in respect of the treaty specified in the Schedule to this Order on the date on which the treaty enters into force for the United Kingdom. This date will be notified in the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes.U.K.

The Agreement establishing an association between the European Community and its Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of Chile, of the other part, signed at Brussels on 18 November 2002 (2).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order declares the Agreement establishing an association between the European Community and its Member States and the Republic of Chile, signed on 18 November 2002, to be a Community Treaty as defined in section 1(2) of the European Communities Act 1972. The Agreement provides a framework for regular political dialogue between the parties; the progressive and reciprocal liberalisation of trade in goods; and contains provisions concerning, inter alia, the strengthening of economic, cultural, scientific and social co-operation. The principal effect of declaring this Agreement to be a Community Treaty as so defined is to bring into play, in relation to it, the provisions of section 2 of the European Communities Act 1972 which provide for the implementation of treaties so specified.
