The Secretary of State makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by section 67(1) and (4) of the Elections Act 2022(1).
1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Elections Act 2022 (Commencement No. 1 and Saving Provision) Regulations 2022.
(2) In these Regulations, “the Act” means the Elections Act 2022.
2. Sections 16, 17, 18 and 19 of the Act come into force on 19th August 2022.
3. The amendment made by section 17(2) of the Act does not apply in relation to evidence given before the coming into force of that section.

These Regulations are the first set of commencement regulations made under the Elections Act 2022 (c. 37). Regulation 2 brings into force sections 16 to 19 of that Act, which form Part 3 of that Act and which relate to the Electoral Commission. Regulation 3 makes saving provision to ensure that the amendment made by section 17(2) of that Act, which inserts protection for a person giving evidence as a witness before the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission, does not apply where the evidence was given before that section comes into force.
