1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Geography) (Wales) Order 2000 and shall come into force on 1st August 2000.
(2) In this Order—
“the Authority” means the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales(3) (“yr Awdurdod”);
“the Document” means the document published by the Authority in 2000 entitled “Geography in the National Curriculum”(4) (“y Ddogfen”);
“the National Assembly” means the National Assembly for Wales (“y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol”).
(3) This Order applies only to schools in Wales.

2. The Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Geography) (Wales) Order 1998(5) is revoked.

3. The National Assembly directs that the provisions relating to attainment targets and programmes of study set out in the Document shall have effect for the purpose of specifying the attainment targets and programmes of study in relation to geography.

Section 368(2)
The Secretary of State referred a proposal to the Authority and gave directions as to the time within which the Authority were to report(8).

The Authority gave notice of the proposal to the bodies and persons referred to in section 368(3) of the Education Act 1996 and gave them a reasonable opportunity of submitting evidence and representations as to the issues arising.

The National Curriculum for Wales for geography will be revised from 1st August 2000. This Order gives legal effect to the new programmes of study, which set out what pupils should be taught, and attainment targets for them. Details of these are set out in a document called “Geography in the National Curriculum” which is available from the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales.
The Order replaces the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Geography) (Wales) Order 1998.
1996 c. 56. Section 356(4) is amended by paragraph 87(a) of Schedule 30 to the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (c. 31).
The functions of the Secretary of State under section 356 of the Education Act 1996 were transferred to the National Assembly for Wales by the National Assembly for Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order 1999 (S.I. 1999/672).
The Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales was established by section 14(1)(b) of the Education Reform Act 1988 (c. 40), continued in existence by section 360 of the Education Act 1996 and given its current name by section 27(1) of the Education Act 1997.

Under section 23(3) of the Government of Wales Act 1998 (c. 38) anything done by the Secretary of State in connection with functions formerly vested in him may be continued by the National Assembly and has effect as if done by the National Assembly.
