Whereas this Order is made only for purposes corresponding to those of section 2 of the Medicinal Products: Prescription by Nurses etc. Act 1992(1):
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 1 of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974(2) (as modified by section 4 of the said Act of 1992) and of all other powers enabling Her in that behalf, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:—
1. This Order may be cited as the Pharmaceutical Services (Northern Ireland) Order 1992 and shall come into operation on such day as the Head of the Department of Health and Social Services may by order appoint.
2. The Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954(3) shall apply to Article 1 and the following provisions of this Order as it applies to a Measure of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
3. In Article 63 of the Health and Personal Social Services (Northern Ireland) Order 1972(4) (which imposes a duty on Health and Social Services Boards to arrange for the provision of drugs and medicines etc. ordered by medical practitioners and dental practitioners), in paragraph (1)—
(a)in sub-paragraphs (a) and (b) the word “and” at the end of each sub-paragraph shall be omitted; and
(b)after sub-paragraph (b) there shall be inserted the following sub-paragraph—
“(bb)listed drugs and medicines and listed appliances which are ordered for those persons by a prescribed description of registered nurse, midwife or health visitor in pursuance of such functions; and”.

This Order is made only for purposes corresponding to those of section 2 of the Medicinal Products: Prescription by Nurses etc. Act 1992.
The Order extends the duty of Health and Social Services Boards in Northern Ireland to arrange for the provision of pharmaceutical services, to cover the supply of such drugs, medicines and appliances as are listed by the Department of Health and Social Services and prescribed by particular categories of nurses, midwives or health visitors in pursuance of their functions in the health service.
